Prepare to be bombarded by kawaii—but in a good way—when ChocoMimi volume 1 hits the streets this summer. Choco and Mimi are best friends in eighth grade. Choco is a serious, reliable girl, a loyal friend, and the straight man to Mimi's comedic turns. Mimi is, um…not the brightest girl in the world. She's forever exasperating the girls' teacher, Mr. Take, dining on fried shrimp during class, and flouting the school's uniform code. Despite their contrasting personalities, the two girls have a lot in common, including a passion for putting together cool ensembles with lots of accessories. Like most girls their age, they're navigating the trials of schoolwork and getting cute guys to notice them. (Think wearing bikinis to class will work?) And in true Japanese style, they celebrate all the holidays and festivals with enthusiasm—and panache.

Unlike most SB manga, ChocoMimi consists mostly of four-panel strips, so it's perfect for reading on the run whenever you need a laugh. Each volume includes fashion notes interspersed with the comics, with details about items and ensembles for different holidays and situations. You'll get ideas for how to accessorize and what to wear on rainy days and autumn walks.

Even though ChocoMimi is under the VIZKIDS imprint and is geared toward eighth-graders, much like Peanuts or Dennis the Menace, it's a funny comic strip that readers of all ages can enjoy. And the fashion aspect and incredibly detailed artwork give it a girly-girl shojo appeal. It's futile to resist this book's cuteness! Don't even try!
