Hikaru Utada, or Hikki-chan to her fans, is one of Japan's biggest pop stars. Her 1999 album First Love is Japan's best-selling album of all time. Now she's looking to achieve similar success with her new album This Is the One. We caught up with Utada, who talked to us about anime, Tetris, and karaoke.
Shojo Beat: What's your favorite song on the new CD and why?
HU: My favorite on the album is a song called "Me Muero." It's Spanish, and it means "I'm dying," or "I die." [laughs] But it's a really light, funny, energetic song with a bit of a Latin flavor to it. It's the kind of music I prefer listening to. Lately, all I've been listening to is Chick Corea and James Brown, and I think a bit of those influences come out in "Me Muero."
SB: What anime have you been into recently?
HU: I'm really into the Ghost in the Shell series. When I came to Columbia University, an older brother of my friend who was a college student in New York asked me about Ghost in the Shell. I said that I don't know it...and he was like, "You don't know Ghost in the Shell?" [laughs] He told me to go see it. Since then I've been really hooked on it.
SB: How did you become so good at Tetris?
HU: [laughter] Oh, I'm just a genius! No, I think it's because I've been playing it so much since I was really young. I can't remember when I did not play Tetris?. I've been playing that game like crazy since age 4 or 5. I was better than my parents from the beginning. I guess I'm just really good at the puzzle kind of games, because I'm insanely good at Dr. Mario too.
SB: What would your go-to karaoke songs be?
HU: I love to sing Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven." I also have to sing The Little Mermaid's "Part of your World."
