For three or four days in midsummer, candle-lit lanterns guide the way as thousands of people travel to the Japanese countryside, to family homes twinkling with warmth and light. Communities dance to the beat of the taiko drums; children's eyes light up at the sight of fireworks displays. This family reunion includes not only brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, and aunts and uncles but also grandparents, great-aunts, and distant ancestors. That's what the holiday of Obon is all about: a time when family members-living and dead-reunite in remembrance and revelry.
